Bert Jansch - Black Waterside

Posted by mantekka in Media - Video - 24 Oct, 2006

Here's a video of Bert Jansch playing Blackwaterside.

His singin's a bit ropey but it's such a fantastic fingerpicking guitar tune...

It's his adaption of a traditional tune which went on to influence Jimmy Page in Zeppelin's Black Mountainside

About Me

Posted by mantekka in General - 24 Oct, 2006

OK, me.

I'm from Dublin, Ireland. Likes me music as you may have guessed.

Started out as a wee rocker listening to metallica, megadeth, queen, ratm, pearl jam, alice in chains, rhcp and so on. Quickly developed a hatred for pop music after getting into these. As I got older and met more people I got into jazz, funk, reggae, ska, folk, traditional Irish, blues, classic rock and gradually started to realise the music of previous decades, notably the 60's and 70's was often far better than the music of the present!

I think jamiroquai was my first step in liking music of a jazz/funk nature. Still love listening to their stuff. I could hear where they were getting alot of influence from when I started listening to the real stuff... Sly & the Family Stone, Parliament / Funkadelic, Ohio Players and so on.

Got a few Blue Note compilation vinyls of a mate and really loved the sound, also got some old reggae and punk vinyls and that just opened my ears and I started exploring all different genres from there.

Eventually got the position as presenter on Dublin's Jazz FM 89.8 which sadly is no longer running.

I love to play aswell, since I was a kid I've played many instruments. Started off on the piano and got to grade 5, then took up the trumpet and got to grade 8, then picked up the bass and taught myself.

I've played the bass in numerous bands through school, college and to this day. Munki, Sorso, Tribeca DC, Jazzbury Ram, Santria to name but a few! From 2004-2006 I played with a soul/motown covers band playing music similar to the commitments, we played lots of pubs all over Dublin and Ireland and many a wedding. It was good fun, had a decent setlist and worked out as a great way to improve and keep in practice.

At the moment I'm gonna start getting these mixes done and maybe look to getting out DJing again in pubs around the place.  Also hoping to get things going with a new band. I've gotten together with two of the best musicians I've played with and we had a really good first time jam so we're all keen on making some new sounds. So far I'm on bass with a Drummer and Guitarist/Singer. Would love to get a synth/keyboard/producer type to fill out the sound once we get underway.

That's about it, hopefully I'll get a new mix out at least every month, and I'm really gonna try make an eclectic collection!

First Post

Howaya,

This is my first post of my first blog. Well I wouldn't really call it a blog, I'm more interested in having a place I can post some music.

My plan is to just build up a collection of posts with links & recommendations for music I think is good. Hopefully I'll get the time to start posting some mixes of my own and throw up some links to music & videos available online.

 We'll see how it goes!
